Lackey steps up, delivers in clutch
The Angels put John Lackey under the gun Sunday and he responded the way a No. 1 starter should. Seventh inning, bases loaded, no out, one run in, 4-2 lead, with Mark Teixeira and Alex Rodriguez approaching his grill. Lackey fanned Teixeira on a 3-and-2 curveball that clipped the outside corner, and then got a hard grounder from Rodriguez, which Chone Figgins short-hopped. Figgins touched third and fired a throw to Kendry Morales, who short-hopped that.

In each game of the past series, the Yankees have had an early lead. In each one they’ve squandered it. They’ve fought back to varying degrees, but in all three cases it was not enough. For most of the series the pitching took the brunt of the blame, but yesterday’s 5-4 loss was a team effort.

Timely hitting, pitching earn Angels sweep
After the Angels broke through against the Yankees with four runs in the fourth inning, John Lackey and the defense took over. Lackey pitched out of a tight jam in the seventh inning with the help of an inning-ending double play, and another twin killing in the eighth got the Halos out of trouble.
